Web security when using credit card transactions

Provide a connection with the physical world As a vendor, list actual address and phone numbers for a real person at your website.
Provide facts and maybe pictures about the business, in order to promote confidence.
Provide alternative ordering methods Give alternative ways of ordering, such as by phone or by fax. It provides an aura of confidence in the business.
Let people know that the rist is on the seller With credit card companies there is a lot of protection for the buyer. If you get transcations charged to your account which you didnt authorize, you get a refund from the credit card issuer.
The rists are no greater than other methods Risks on the internet are the same as in mail order. If you are confident about purchasing by phone, fax or mail, you should be confident about the internet. Rights are the same, covered by the Sale of Goods Act (1979) and Trade Descriptions Act (1976).
Faulty goods If you receive faulty goods you have the right to a full refund. The only exception to this is when buying from abroad.
Internet fraud is hard to find Despite the press hype about internet fraud, real life examples are hard to find. There is more general credit card fraud than internet credit card fraud.
Credit card information is encrypted When travelling on the internet, in most cases, credit card information is encrypted. Look for details of the web site security method: SSL (secure socket layer) or bank-approved software.
Same risk as elsewhere The risk of using a credit card to pay for transactions on the net is the same as in normal use, for example in a super market or a restaurant (lots of copies of one slip could be made, details copied...)
Web transactions are mainstream Everybody is doing it.
Fraud is at the vendor expense In general the above is the case. Special cases are when the it is difficult to take action against fraud, for example, coutries outside Western Europe and North America. Imagine buying from someone in Sierra Leone using a credit card!
